Statement of Support and Solidarity

As we celebrate the emancipation of the last remaining slaves in the state of Texas on Juneteenth, we cannot ignore our anger, sadness, and despair that has overcome the Black community. Just as our ancestors suffered in bondage until 1865, in 2020, we are still suffering. We are tired. We need change.

Since the founders of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators conceptualized our organization, 34 years ago, TABSE has remained diligent in the fight for equity in education to improve educational opportunities for Black students and educators of Black students. We know all too well about the racial disparities and injustice that exist within the United States of America, and we will not tolerate it.

The recent events that have taken place in our country are heartbreaking and unacceptable. The abhorrent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and several more, shed light on our country’s indiscretions and have made the outcry for Black lives to simply matter a global movement. As the largest state organization dedicated to improving opportunities for Black students and educators, we are significantly impacted by the continuous killings of unarmed Black people and stand in solidarity and support of eradicating systemic racism, police brutality, social injustice, and much more.

On this day, we honor and pay homage to our ancestors for their fight for our freedom. Although we continue to fight to be considered an equal human being, we are optimistic that collectively, combined with the strength of our ancestors, as we apply pressure, our voices will be heard and action will be taken.

While processing a wide range of feelings and emotions, TABSE will continue the fight for racial equity and change. We’re excited to work with our dedicated members and supporters to channel our feelings into positive action to help our Black students breathe in the face of blatant racism and adversity. Now more than ever, our students and educators need us to be their advocates, to stand with them, and to guide them. We accept that challenge, and we are here for them.

TABSE is blessed to have members that are committed to supporting Black lives. Because of that support, tenacity, and willingness to never give up, we have a voice in Texas that will be heard.

We invite you to join us on our quest for racial equality in America. We will lead with integrity and honor and proudly tell everyone that Black Lives Matter! To join us in our pursuit of equity for all, visit www.TABSE.net to get active.
